Armed thieves driving stolen Jeep search for unlocked cars in NW Side community

by BRIAN NADIG

Armed thieves who were driving a stolen vehicle were caught on surveillance video looking for unlocked cars at about 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, near Rosedale and Linder avenues in the Indian Woods community on Chicago’s NW Side.

The footage, which was taken from a Ring doorbell camera, shows two masked individuals exit a dark blue Jeep Grand Cherokee and start checking car door handles, apparently looking for an unlocked vehicle to steal or burglarize. They were wearing dark clothing and gloves, and, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police, one of them appears to be holding a gun.

On the video, all of the parked vehicles whose door handles were checked appeared to be locked.

There were no vehicle break-ins reported from the immediate area during that time, according to police.

At least two others, including a driver, appear to be inside the Jeep while the doors were being checked.

The Jeep is believed to have been stolen from the 4th (South Chicago) District earlier on July 22 and then was recovered later in the 4th District the same day, police said.

In the 16th District the number of reported stolen motor vehicles this year has been 254, down 41 percent from 433 last year during the same period, according to police. In addition, misdemeanor thefts are up 4 percent, from 630 to 654, while felony thefts are down 31 percent, from 657 to 452.
