Arrest for drugs, replica guns reported at Gompers; tent, curfew rules will be enforced in portion of park

A man who reportedly was living in the tent encampment at Gompers Park, 4222 W. Foster Ave., was arrested at about 10:05 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, for allegedly possessing suspected drugs, ammunition and two replica/pellet guns, according to Chicago police.

Officers reported that they were waved down by a 46-year-old male who told them that he had recovered a firearm from another man who was carrying the weapon, according to police.

The officers reported that they then located the suspect and that he was placed into custody, police said.

The suspect, who was identified by police as Jean Cornivell, age 26, was charged with one felony count of possession of a controlled substance and a misdemeanor count of ammunition possession without a valid FOID card, police said. He also was issued two citations for replica/pellet firearms, police said.

The suspect has a court hearing scheduled for Wednesday, March 26, at the Skokie Courthouse, 5600 Old Orchard Road, police said.

The city recently held an Accelerated Moving Event at Gompers, as those moving there were offered housing opportunities. It can take up to about 90 days for the housing to become available.

The Chicago Park District has posted a notice of enforcement at the park, stating that as of April 1, no one can be in the “Little Gompers” ball field area from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. and living structures will not be tolerated there.

The park district has said that the ball field area needs to be available this summer for league baseball games and for nearby renovation/constriction projects at the park.

“Little Gompers” is the portion of the Northwest Side park located south of Foster Avenue.
