Bridge over Kennedy Expressway at Austin Avenue. set to close June 8 for repairs on Chicago’s NW Side

The pedestrian bridge over the Kennedy Expressway at Austin Avenue will be closed for repairs starting Monday, June 8, for an estimated six to 10 weeks, according to Alderman James Gardiner (45th).
The pedestrian bridge runs over the expressway between Avondale Avenue and the Gladstone Park Metra Station, 5500 N. Austin Ave. (at Northwest Highway), on Chicago’s Northwest Side.
The city Department of Transportation will perform structural repairs, including bearing repairs at the middle pier and concrete deck repairs near the center joint, to ensure the long-term safety and stability of the bridge, according to Gardiner.
During construction, the bridge will not be accessible, and pedestrians will be directed to use Nagle Avenue to cross the expressway for the duration of the closure.
“This bridge is frequently used by residents and commuters to access nearby transit, parks, local destinations and schools. If you typically walk this route, please allow extra time while the detour is in place,” Gardiner said in a letter to residents.
Also in the area, there was once a pedestrian bridge over the Kennedy between the Jefferson Park Metra Station, 5020 N. Northwest Hwy., and the residential neighborhood immediately to the east of the expressway, but the bridge was removed about 20 years ago.
