Car wash proposed at Elston and Central on site of former DiLeo’s restaurant

by BRIAN NADIG

A car wash is planned for the former Republic Bank/DiLeo’s restaurant site at Elston and Central avenues on Chicago’s Northwest Side.

Alderman James Gardiner (45th) will hold a community meeting on the proposal at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the Kolping Society, 5826 N. Elston Ave.

The project requires the property to be rezoned from B3-1 to C1-2.

The main entrance and exit for the car wash would be onto Elston, with no access from Central. Secondary driveways reportedly are planned for Parkside Avenue and Seminole Street. Those driveways would be primarily used for problematic vehicles, for example if they are too big for the wash.

The first floor of the former bank building was demolished about 3 years ago, but the demolition was delayed several times due to environmental concerns. All or part of the basement remains.

A previous proposal for the site called for a 40-unit apartment building with 60 parking spaces, but Gardiner rejected the plan several years ago following a community meeting in which many residents voiced objections.

This marks the second car wash proposal for the area this year.

Several months ago a car wash was proposed for the former Produce Center site, 5820 N. Milwaukee Ave., but residents objected. A new proposal for that parcel, a Fit City Kids recreation facility, appears to be moving forward.
