Charges announced in Norridge mall shooting

by CYRYL JAKUBOWSKI

A man was charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot two people at about 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, outside an entrance to the Harlem Irving Plaza shopping center, 4104 N. Harlem Ave., according to Norridge police.

Norridge police chief James Jobe said that the man was involved in a domestic disturbance in the 11th (Harrison) Police District and that he allegedly stole his 29-year-old former girlfriend’s car and abducted her two children, age 4 and 6.

Jobe said that the man met his ex-girlfriend and her 36-year-old cousin near entrance C in the parking garage and that following a confrontation the man shot the woman in the head, shoulder and wrist and the man in the groin. The two were admitted to Lutheran General Hospital and are expected to survive, Jobe said. The children were not harmed, according to police.

The suspect was identified by police as Everett D. Harris, age 31, of the 1100 block of North Keeler Avenue.

Harris was charged with three counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery on a public way, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking, one count of possession of a stolen motor vehicle, one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and one count of aggravated driving with a revoked license.

Jobe said that the man was apprehended near Cicero and Fullerton avenues in Chicago.

Jobe said that the incident happened quickly and that the public was not in danger because the man had a specific target.

Jobe said that the shooting is the first at the mall since it opened 58 years ago.

"I’d like to commend mall security along with the witnesses that provided valuable information to both dispatch and our officers on scene," Jobe said in a press release. "While incidents such as this are not (a) common theme in our town, I wasn’t to assure the residents and visitors of Norridge that our officers and paramedics are properly trained to respond, protect and maintain the peace in this town."
