Chicago school board seeks input on superintendent search: May 15 meeting at Steinmetz

by BRIAN NADIG
The Chicago Public Schools District 1 will hold a community meeting on its search for a new CPS superintendent at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at Steinmetz College Prep High School, 3030 N. Mobile Ave.
“The school board is trying to have a more transparent approach for its search for a new superintendent and (wants) community input,” said school board member Ed Bannon.
Bannon represents District 1A, which includes parts of the Northwest Side, including Edison Park, Norwood Park, Edgebrook and most of Jefferson Park and parts of Dunning. A similar community meeting is being held in each of the CPS 10 districts.
Board member Jennifer Custer also is expected to attend the meeting at Steinmetz. Her District 1B includes Belmont-Cragin and Postage Park.
Current CPS chief executive officer Pedro Martinez is leaving the post in mid-June after clashes with Mayor Brandon Johnson. The Chicago Board of Education is renaming the CEO position “superintendent.” The board is seeking a leader who has an education license/degree, and there are reports that the mayor wants one of his own staffers to take the position but lacks the required background typically required of a superintendent candidate.
The meeting will include presentations on the role of the superintendent and new CPS initiatives and then audience members will break up into smaller discussion groups, and input will be gathered, Bannon said.
Half of the new school board was elected to two-year terms in 2024, and the other half was appointed to two-year terms. In 2026, all positions will be elected, with half for 4-year terms and the other half for two-year terms.
