Edison annex work is 75 percent done
The Public Building Commission of Chicago has issued a progress report on the construction of an annex to Edison Park School, at 6220 N. Olcott Ave., saying that the project is 75 percent complete.
Work on the project began early this year and is on schedule and under budget, according to the commission.
The commission was given budgetary authority of just more than $14 million for the project, which will add a 30,560-square-foot two-story annex that will link to the existing school and that will serve approximately 315 students. The annex will have nine standard classrooms, one science classroom and a kitchen and student dining center.
The project also includes the renovation of two existing classrooms and an outdoor playlot. The annex features environmentally sustainable elements including the diversion of construction waste from landfills, utilization of durable and recycled materials in construction, light sensors and daylight harvesting, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, low flow/low consumption water usage, native and adaptive landscape species and storm water management.
"I am pleased to let the community know that the work is moving ahead as scheduled and that we are in the final stages of the project," commission executive director Erin Lavin Cabonargi said. "This project is an example of our strong partnership with Chicago Public Schools and our commitment to creating better learning environments for our students.
"I want to thank Edison Park School principal Pete Zimmerman for his cooperation and support during the project. I am confident the new annex will be welcomed by the students and staff at Edison Park, and we look forward to the completion of the project by the end of the calendar year so that the Edison Park School community can enjoy these wonderful new facilities starting in 2014."
The commission manages construction and renovation projects for the City of Chicago and its sister agencies. The mayor of Chicago is its chairman.
