Fire destroys ‘little’ library at Jefferson Memorial Park

One of those “little” free lending libraries that seem to be gaining in popularity in recent years was burnt to a crisp either late Thursday, Aug. 22, or early Friday, Aug. 23, outside the Jefferson Memorial Park fieldhouse, 4822 N. Long Ave.
Park employees found most of the wooden box disintegrated and its contents on the ground burnt when they arrived at 8 a.m. Friday. There was no damage to the park’s other lending library, which is a former metal newspaper box.
The “little” libraries are frequently used at the park, as residents place books and board games in them so others can use them.
exact time of the vandalism is not clear, but it occurred after 8 p.m.
Efforts are expected to be made to have the lending library box replaced.
These types of library boxes, which often feature artwork, can be found in public spaces and occasionally on the front lawn of a home.
