Funding to be allocated for turf field at Onahan School

by BRIAN NADIG
Funds for the installation of a new turf sports field at Onahan School, 6634 W. Raven St., are included in a capital improvement budget that the Chicago Board of Education is expected to approve at its Thursday, July 30, meeting, according to District 1A school board member Ed Bannon.
In recent years, there reportedly have been numerous injures due to the poor condition of the existing grass field, which includes an uneven surface in many areas.
Bannon thanked the many parents and Onahan Local School Council members who have been “bringing attention to this matter” for years. He said that their passion shows the importance of having an elected school board, which gives communities their own representative on the board, which until two years ago was fully appointed the mayor.
Temporary repairs are being made this summer to the existing field, Bannon said.
A timeline for the installation of the artificial surface has not been finalized, but about $3 million will be allocated for the new field, Bannon said. The project is expected to be completed within the next few years, he said.
The project includes $800,000 in federal funds secured by U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (D-5) and $500,000 in state funds secured by state Senator Robert Martwick (D-10), according to Bannon.
For several years Alderman Anthony Napolitano (41st) has been critical of the Chicago Public Schools for ignoring what he has described as an important student safety issue. He has said that the school community deserves a safer, modern sports field.
District 1A includes part of the Northwest Side.
