Gladstone Park Bakery building sold

The Gladstone Park Bakery building at 5742-44 N. Milwaukee Ave. recently was sold, although details on the 99-year-old building’s future use were not immediately available.

5742 Milwaukee LLC acquired the property on Jan. 9, according to county records.

The bakery closed about 10 years ago, and the property was listed on the market in 2017. In its heyday the bakery sold 400 decorated cakes each weekend and in May and June the number climbed to 600 due to graduations and weddings, according to a 1976 Chicago Tribune article.

The building, which has two second-floor apartments, was originally constructed as two storefronts, but a wall was later removed to accommodate the bakery.

At one time the bakery expanded to a neighboring building at 5740 N. Milwaukee Ave. due to its high volume of sales. A Midwest Kitchen, a shared kitchen concept that includes a retail pickup window for cookies and coffee, now operates in that building.

In 2012 the producers of the former television show “Mob Doctor” filmed several bakery scenes in the building.
