Grand opening of Sunny Village Cafe in Jefferson Park set for Sept. 14

by BRIAN NADIG
The grand opening of a cafe with a play area for children up to age 6 is set for Saturday, Sept. 14, at 5918 W. Lawrence Ave. in Jefferson Park.
The grand opening party for Sunny Village Cafe will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 14.
It is a ticketed event, and tickets can be purchased at www.sunnyvillagecafe.com
Admission will include a timed entry (9 a.m., 10 a.m. 11 a.m. or noon), up to three hours of play time, face painting, a discount on food and retail purchases, a photo op, a chance to meet “everyone’s favorite blue dog,” a raffle entry and more.
A “soft opening” will take place for a few days prior to the grand opening, said owner Georgena Hurst. Regular admission to the play area is $14 for children 6 months old to 6 years old, with no charge for parents. Discounted memberships also are available.
The cafe will feature products from local businesses, including coffee from Perkolator and baked items from Delightful Pastries. Nut-free and gluten-free items and an array of healthy snacks also will be on the menu.
“We eventually hope to expand the menu,” Hurst said.
The cafe is designed to give local families a convenient place where parents can meet other parents and their children can have a safe and friendly environment to play.
“I’m a 10-minute walk away (from the cafe),” said Hurst, a Jefferson Park resident whose own children will be playing at the cafe. “It’s hard to get the kids in a car and find a place. … It’s about a 20-minute drive to anywhere in the city.”
The play space includes a custom-made CTA train that is “a nod to my children who like taking the train” and “a nod to (the CTA terminal in) Jefferson Park,” Hurst said.
It also features “imaginative play with dolls … and dress up” and a designated area for children 2 years and younger. A quiet area is for nursing moms and those children who may need time to “chill out,” Hurst said.
A slide also is available.
Parents are to supervise their children at all times inside the cafe.
Regular hours for open play time will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Rentals for private parties will be available Saturday afternoons and Sundays.
Sunny Village Cafe, which took over the space previously occupied by Sally Beauty supplies, is located along a stretch of Lawrence where several new businesses have opened or are in the works. They include Vito’s Vault, A Taste of the Philippines and Plot Twist used books (opening in a few weeks).
