Gunfire erupts on Ainslie in Jefferson Park on Chicago’s NW Side; shots also fired in Dunning in separate incident

by BRIAN NADIG

About 30 gunshots were fired from the occupants of two vehicles at about 3 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, for several blocks on Ainslie Street, just east of Laramie Avenue in Jefferson Park.

No injuries were reported, but some parked cars were damaged from the gunfire, according to Chicago police. In the 5100 block of Ainslie a bullet hit a driver’s side mirror and appeared to have become lodged in the mirror’s covering.

Surveillance footage shows two vehicles traveling east on Ainslie speeding through a stop sign at the Ainslie-Laramie intersection, where the Olive’s Neighborhood Garden for the Hungry is located. One vehicle appears to be white and the other a darker color.

The gunfire cannot be seen on the surveillance footage but can be heard as the vehicles traveled east toward Cicero Avenue. Shell casings from three different guns reportedly were found.

Also in the 16th District last night, gunfire was reported between the occupants of two vehicles in the 7700 block of West Belmont Avenue in the Dunning area. Police described it as an apparent “road incident.”

A 23-year-old man, a conceal carry holder, reported that at about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, he was driving east on Belmont when a driver from a white sedan started firing shots at him and that he returned fire, police said. The sedan then crashed into a building, and its driver fled the area, police said.

Police are investigating reports that an occupant of the sedan may have checked himself into a hospital and left before his treatment was completed.
