Illinois to reopen NW Side vehicle emissions testing site on Mon., March 17; ribbon-cutting set for Sunday

The Portage Park Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the reopening of the Northwest Side vehicle emissions testing facility from 11 a.m. to noon Sunday, March 16, one day before it actually starts testing.
The facility, located at 6959 W. Forest Preserve Drive, closed in 2016, leading area residents to drive to suburban testing centers.
State Representative Lindsey LaPointe (D-19) and state Senator Robert Martwick (D-10) sponsored legislation calling for the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to replace the dismantled testing centers in the city. The Forest Preserve site was used as a COVID-19 testing during the early stages of the pandemic.
The ceremony will include a demonstration of a mobile testing unit and remarks by LaPointe and Martwick. In addition to the chamber, the event is being co-hosted by the IEPA and Eli’s cheesecake along with the legislators.
Plans call for the site to have a self-service kiosk that will be available 24 hours a day seven days a week.
The center officially is scheduled to open at 8 a.m. Monday, March 17, for testing.
The public is invited to attend the March 16 ceremony.
