Jarasa Kabob now open at Milwaukee & Foster in Jefferson Park

by BRIAN NADIG

When customers first walk into the new Jarasa Kabob at 5233 N. Milwaukee Ave. they can expect to be offered a “shot” of its homemade lentil soup.

“Even before you are looking at the menu, we give you a shot of soup,” said Khalid Hindawi, who is a partner in the business along with owner-chef Marwan Eleimat.

The restaurant is set up “Chipotle style” in which customers are face to face with those preparing the food and taking orders, One of the most popular dishes is the custom-made bowl for $8.95 in which the customer makes five choices, picking the type of rice, salad, spread, protein and sauce.

The spreads include hummus and baba ghanouj, and the salad choices include tahini, Arabic, eggplant, coleslaw, chickpeas, cucumber yogurt, tabbouleh and fava bean.

As for the protein, chicken or steak shawarma, and chicken, spicy chicken, kufta, lamb and steak kabob. The menu also includes a variety of sandwiches, entrees, falafel, spreads and feta fries.

The dishes come from family recipes that Eleimat learned as a teen in his native Jordan, where hummus and falafel were among the first items that his family taught him.  “I … learned to … make everything from scratch,” said Eleimat, who opened Crave Kabob in Chicago but has since sold that business.

This Jefferson Park location is Jarasa Kabob’s second location. The first one opened a few years ago at 3641 W. Dempster St., Skokie.

The new location at the Milwaukee-Foster intersection is expected to have a soft opening the week of Oct. 28, with a grand opening set for Monday, Nov. 4.

It is located inside the former King’s Gyros No. 2, but the interior has been gutted and completely remodeled. The walls include large bright photos of the town of Eleimat’s hometown of Jarasa in Jordan and the Dead Sea.

Hindawi said that they signed a lease for the location earlier this year, noting that it’s only a five-minute drive from where he lives in Portage Park.

Hindawi said on Oct. 22 that the restaurant isn’t even open yet, but he’s met so many local residents who say there are thrilled to have Jarasa Kabob in their neighborhood.

The hours will be 11 a.m. to midnight Mondays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays. On-duty police will receive a 15-percent discount.

Visit www.jarasakabob.com or call 708-667-0887. Catering and online ordering are available, and delivery is available through DoorDash, UberEats and GrubHub.
