Joined Hands Food Pantry moving from OLV in Jefferson Park to St. Bartholomew in Portage Park

by BRIAN NADIG

The Joined Hands Food Pantry is scheduled to relocate on Wednesday, June 17, from the grounds of the former Our Lady of Victory Church to the Saint Bartholomew Church, 3601 N. Lavergne Ave., as the OLV church and convent reportedly are being sold.

The pantry typically provides food to 100 to 120 families on a weekly basis, mostly from the 60630 and 60641 Zip Code areas, including Jefferson Park and Portage Park.

It is affiliated with the Greater Chicago Food Depositary and has been a multi-denominational venture between the OLV Parish and Saint John’s Lutheran Church and School, 4939 W. Montrose Ave. The pantry relocated from Saint John’s to OLV in 2020 because of the social distancing needs of the Lutheran elementary school.

In 2021, the OLV church closed and merged with the newly formed Our Lady of Rosary Parish, which also includes the former Saint Pascal and Saint Bartholomew parishes.

The adjacent former OLV school was sold several years ago and is now home to the Horizon Science Academy Belmont, 4434 N. Laramie Ave. There reportedly is a potential buyer for the OLV church and convent.

The distribution of food at the pantry at OLV is held outside from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, barring inclement weather.

Some of the food is stored in the former convent, where there are refrigerators, but much of the food is delivered from the depository on Wednesdays.

The pantry also offers some excess food from area businesses, according to a pantry spokesperson. In addition, some fresh or frozen meat is often available at the pantry.

The logistics of how the pantry’s food will be distributed at Saint Bartholomew are still being worked out, the spokesperson said.

The pantry welcomes its regular weekly clients and new clients.
