Local Crime from 16th District 1-10-18

A MAN WAS arrested after he allegedly burglarized the garage of a home in the 5100 block of West School Street and attempted to break into a home in the 5000 block of West School Street at about 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A 37-year-old man reported that he saw a man removing items from the garage of a residence in the 5100 block of West School Street and placing them into a red sport utility vehicle, according to police. The man reported that he and other witnesses approached him and the man entered the vehicle, drove away and then crashed the vehicle into two garages, fences and a Commonwealth Edison pole in the alley, and that several items fell out of the opened rear lift gate of the vehicle before he exited the vehicle and ran away, according to police.
A 42-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman reported that they saw a man enter their rear yard and open their rear storm door and started turning the door knob and pushing on their inner door to gain entry, and that the man apprehended him and held him in their back yard until police arrived, police said.
The man was arrested after he matched a description and officers discovered that he had allegedly taken tools valued at $3,500 from the garage that belonged to the renter, a lawnmower valued at $375 from the garage that belonged to the garage owner, and that the vehicle he was driving had been reported stolen on Monday, Jan. 1, in the 4800 block of West Saint Paul Avenue, according to police.
The suspect was identified by police as Juan C. DeJesus, age 50, of the 4900 block of West Huron Street.

A LYFT DRIVER reported that she was robbed at about 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, in the 3600 block of North Osage Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 40-year-old woman reported that after she dropped off a customer, she discovered the front passenger-side tire of her vehicle was flat, and that a man approached her and offered to help her change the tire, according to police.
The woman reported that when she took her purse out of the trunk and put it over her shoulder, the man attempted to grab the purse and as she struggled with the man, another man approached and pointed a black semi-automatic handgun at her, and that they took the purse containing $500 in cash, identification cards and a debit card from her before they entered a black 4-door sport utility vehicle and drove away, police said.
The men were described as Hispanic, age 20 to 25, between 5-0 and 5-5 and wearing black jackets.

SHOTS WERE fired at a vehicle at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, in the 4700 block of North Cumberland Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A 30-year-old man and 26-year-old man reported that as they were driving their vehicle out of a parking lot, two gunshots struck a rear window and shattered it, and that they then saw a black Honda automobile driving away at a high rate of speed, according to police. The men reported the incidents might be gang-related, police said.

AN EMPLOYEE reported that his vehicle was stolen at about 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, from the parking lot of Jiffy Lube, 7200 N. Harlem Ave., according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The employee reported that he started the ignition to his gray 2008 Acura TI to warm the vehicle up in the parking lot and then exited the vehicle and entered the business, and that a person drove away in the car north through an alley, according to police. The employee reported that the video surveillance system at the business recorded the incident, police said.

A WOMAN reported that her vehicle was stolen between 4:20 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, while it was parked in the 4900 block of West Eddy Street, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that she started the ignition to her 2002 Volvo to warm up the engine and entered her home and that when she returned she discovered the vehicle was missing, according to police.
Similar thefts in which people warmed their vehicles and they were stolen were reported in the 6500 block of West Byron Street on Jan. 4, and in a parking lot in the 4800 block of West Lawrence Avenue on Jan. 2., police said.

AN EMPLOYEE of Papa Chris’ Place, 6235 W. Touhy Ave., reported that the business was burglarized between 1 a.m. and 6:20 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Officers responded to a call of an alarm and discovered that a rock had been thrown through the inner and outer east entrance doors and a side door, and that a person had entered the business and opened two cash registers, according to police. An employee reported that only loose change was missing from the cash registers, police said.

A WOMAN reported that her vehicle was burglarized between 11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, and 1 a.m. the following day, while it was parked in the 3200 block of North Central Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned to her vehicle she discovered that the rear driver’s side window had been broken and that her Michael Kors purse valued at $300 containing a wallet valued at $100, a cell phone charger valued at $100, a key to her residence, her driver’s license and credit cards was missing, according to police.

A MAN REPORTED that his vehicle was burglarized between midnight and 1 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, while it was parked in the parking lot of Export Fitness, 5515 W. Irving Park Road, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that when he returned to his vehicle he discovered that the trunk had been opened and that clothing valued at $300, cologne valued at $50 and mail were missing, according to police.

SEVERAL vehicle thefts were reported between Dec. 25 and Jan. 7, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Incidents of stolen vehicles were reported in the 5400 block of West Cornelia Avenue, the 5600 block of West Giddings Street, the 4200 block of North Meade Avenue, the 4500 block of North Narragansett Avenue and the 5700 block of West Eddy Street, according to police.
