Local Crime from 16th District 1-23-19
AN EMPLOYEE of the Mobil Gas station, 4409 N. Central Ave., reported that the store was robbed at about 1 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The employee reported that a man asked to use the bathroom and that she emerged from the enclosed cashier’s booth to help the man, and that the man followed her back into the booth, demanded cash and displayed a knife and a hammer and threatened her after she said she couldn’t open the register, according to police.
The woman reported that she ran outside and grabbed a baseball bat before the man exited with the entire cash register and she struck the man multiple times and shattered the rear window of the man’s vehicle, a small white four-door sedan, but that the man escaped north on Central with the register containing an unknown amount of cash, police said.
The man was described as white and about 5-10 and 220 pounds.
AN EMPLOYEE of Byline Bank, 3555 N. Harlem Ave., reported that she was the victim of a scam at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The employee reported that she was the victim of a quick change scam and that a man handed her four $10 bills in exchange for two $20’s, and continued to exchange the bills for higher-valued bills until he man left with $2,210 in cash, according to police.
The man was described as black with a medium complexion, age 35 to 45, about 5-9 and 240 pounds, with brown eyes, short brown hair, and wearing a black jacket and blue jeans.
A MAN REPORTED that he was threatened with a gun in an apparent road rage incident at about 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, in the 3800 block of North Meade Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 31-year-old man reported that he was driving south on Meade when a man suddenly entered the crosswalk and blocked the road, and that when he honked his horn the man tapped his passenger window with a handgun and said, "Do you know who I am? I will blow your head off," before he drove around the man and fled, according to police.
The man was described as white with a light complexion, age 18 to 22, 5-10 to 6-1 and 180 to 200 pounds.
A MAN WAS placed into custody following a fight between a group of people at about 12:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, in the parking lot of the Shell Gas station, 6747 W. Irving Park Road, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Officers saw a group of men fighting in the parking lot and while they were breaking up the fight they saw a .45-caliber handgun loaded with eight live rounds fall to the ground, according to police. Officers placed a man into custody after two witnesses identified the man as having allegedly pointed the gun in front of the gas station before the fight started, according to police.
It is not clear if the man was charged with a crime.
A MAN REPORTED that a group of men attacked him at about 6:10 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, in the 3400 block of North Melvina Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 18-year-old man reported that he was standing at the corner of Melvina and Roscoe Street when he heard someone say "hey" and that he turned and saw a group of males wearing facemasks exit a vehicle who struck him repeatedly with a baseball bat, according to police. The man reported that he lost consciousness during the incident and that his mother drove him to Community First Medical Center later and he was later transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital for trauma evaluation, police said.
A WOMAN reported that a man attempted to rob her at about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, in the backyard in the 3800 block of North Harlem Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned to her rear yard a man was waiting in front of her doorway and said "give me your phone or anything," and that the man punched her in the face three times before he ran away without proceeds, according to police.
The man was described as 5-9 to 6-0 and wearing black pants and a black jacket.
A WOMAN reported that her garage in the 5900 block of North Harlem Avenue was damaged by bullets before 7:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned to her garage she discovered that five bullet holes were in a garage window, according to police.
A WOMAN reported that her ex-boyfriend broke into her apartment in the 5200 block of West Melrose Street and threatened her at gunpoint at about 1:40 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that she was sleeping when her ex-boyfriend broke through her front door using a credit card and took about $5,000 in cash, and that when she woke up the man slapped her in the face and pointed a black handgun at her before he fled, according to police.
The man was described as age 26, about 5-8 and 200 pounds, with brown eyes, bald brown hair and a medium skin complexion.
A WOMAN reported that her home in the 5800 block of North Melvina Avenue was burglarized between 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 and 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned home from a vacation her son discovered a pry mark on the front door, and that 31 pieces of jewelry and precious stones valued at $8,265 total, a collector’s coin valued at $500 and a Celtic cross valued at $300 were missing, according to police.
A MAN WAS arrested on assault charges following an alleged theft incident at about 8:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, at Fannie’s Cafe, Bakery and Boutique, 5044 W. Montrose Ave., according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
An employee reported that a man grabbed a container of cookies offered for sale, and two customers followed the man as he fled south on Milwaukee Avenue and when the man realized he was being followed he threatened to stab the two men with a pen, according to police. One of the men reported that he continued to follow the man and give updates of his position to officers, who arrested the man at about 9 a.m. in the area of Laramie and Berteau avenues, police said.
The suspect was not identified by police at the time of the report because he is homeless and had no identification.
A MAN REPORTED that his apartment in the 8600 block of West Summerdale Avenue was burglarized between 6 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that when he returned home he discovered that his dresser drawers were open and that a gold bracelet valued at $3,000, a gold ring valued at $300, a U.S. Passport and a social security card were missing, according to police.
