Local Crime from 16th District 3-7-18

A WOMAN reported that two men stole her vehicle at gunpoint at about 12:15 a.m. Sunday, March 4, in the 5900 block of West Giddings Street, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 35-year-old woman reported that after she parked her tan 2007 Honda Civic, a man walked up to the driver’s side, pointed a black handgun at her and said "give me your car," while another man approached the passenger side and attempted to enter her vehicle, according to police. The woman reported that as she opened the door to exit her vehicle, the man with the handgun took her cell phone as both men entered the vehicle and then drove away, police said.
Officers located the vehicle in the 4600 block of North Central Park Avenue and the men crashed the vehicle into parked cars, exited the vehicle and ran away, according to police. The woman’s vehicle and cell phone were recovered at the scene, police said.
The men were described as Hispanic, age 20 to 30 and wearing black hooded jackets with black masks covering their nose and mouth, and one of the suspects was described as 5-7 to 5-9 and about 160 pounds, and the second suspect was described as 5-5 to 5-6 and between 140 to 150 pounds.

A MAN WAS arrested after he allegedly broke into an apartment and threatened a man with a knife at about 1:05 p.m. Friday, March 2, in the 5400 block of West Berteau Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A 39-year-old man reported that a man rang his rear door bell and that when he answered, the man said that he needed a broom to clean up an area of the building, and that when he turned his back the man opened the storm door, stepped into the kitchen, pointed a knife at him and demanded his belongings, according to police.
The man reported that he reached for the man’s knife and struggled with him and that when he called out to his 13-year-old daughter to call the police, the man said, "If you don’t let me go, more people will come," before he broke loose from him, exited the apartment and ran away east through the alley, police said.
Officers discovered a man matching a description and apprehended him near Warner and Lockwood avenues, according to police.
The suspect was described by police as Pepe Martinez, age 39, of the 2400 block of West 45th Place.

SHOTS WERE fired at about 8:25 p.m. Saturday, March 3, in the 5000 block of North Monitor Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A 33-year old man reported that an unknown individual driving a black sport utility vehicle fired three rounds from a handgun at him and then drove west on West Higgins Avenue, and a 45-year-old man reported that the three bullets struck his vehicle in the driver’s side mirror, the driver’s side door and the driver’s side window, according to police.

A MAN WAS arrested on drug and weapons charges at about 9 p.m. Friday, March 2, in the 8500 block of West Bryn Mawr Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Officers attempted to stop a vehicle that was speeding with inoperable headlights that continued to drive away and failed to stop at a stop sign, and the driver was arrested after the officers eventually stopped the vehicle and they discovered a blue steel Ruger magazine containing six live .380-caliber rounds, one live .380-caliber round, two clear plastic bags containing .5 grams of a white powdery substance suspected to be crack cocaine and a clear plastic bag containing eight pills of suspected hydrocodone inside the vehicle, according to police.
The suspect was identified by police as Nicholas A. Garcia, age 21, of the 8500 block of West Bryn Mawr Avenue.

A WOMAN reported that her residence in the 6700 block of North Algonquin Avenue was burglarized between 10 a.m. Saturday, March 3, and 11:55 a.m. Sunday, March 4, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned home she discovered the front door had been forced open and that costume jewelry valued at $500 and her grandmother’s diamond wedding ring valued at $10,000 were missing, according to police.

A MAN REPORTED that his residence in the 3200 block of North Laramie Avenue was burglarized between 5:40 p.m. and 8:10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that when he returned home he discovered that his front door was unlocked and a window had been removed from his rear door and that television set valued at $1,600 and a Dell computer valued at $1,000 were missing, according to police.

SEVERAL vehicle thefts were reported between Feb. 27 and March 2, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Stolen vehicles were reported in the 4900 block of West Addison Street, the 8700 block of West Summerdale Avenue, the 4900 block of West Winnemac Avenue, the 3500 block of North Pioneer Avenue and the 5800 block of West Melrose Street, according to police.

THEFTS OF catalytic converters from vehicles were reported between Feb. 25 and March 4, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Thefts were reported in the 5200 and 5300 blocks of West Agatite Avenue, the 5300 block of West Montrose Avenue, the 5200 and 5900 blocks of West Dakin Street, the 5400 block of North Mulligan Avenue, the 5400 and 5500 blocks of North Natchez Avenue, the 5000 block of West Gunnison Street, the 5000 block of North Laramie Avenue and at two residences in the 5700 block of West Leland Avenue, according to police.
