Local Crime from 16th District 5-22-19
Shots were fired at about 3 a.m. Thursday, May 16, in the 4500 block of North Long Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A witness reported that he heard two gunshots and then an additional five gunshots and that he looked out the window and saw an unknown vehicle speed away south, and officers recovered seven spent 9mm bullet casings from the ground, according to police.
A woman reported that she was robbed at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday, May 19, in the 5200 block of North Northwest Highway, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 26-year-old woman reported that a tan-colored Jeep Compass drove up and a man and woman got out and started insulting her, and that the woman pointed a knife at her, kicked her in the leg and took her purse containing a bank card and her cellphone valued at $1,000 before they fled, according to police.
The woman was described as white/Hispanic with a light complexion, age 32 to 35, 5-7 to 5-9, 130 to 155 pounds, and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. The man was described as white/ Hispanic and 5-7 to 5-9.
A man reported that a man attacked him and vandalized his vehicle at about 9:30 p.m. Friday, May 17, in a parking lot in the 5600 block of West Belmont Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 42-year-old man reported that as he opened the door of his parked Jeep Grand Cherokee he accidentally bumped the car next to him, and that the other vehicle’s owner became irate and aggressive and punched him in the mouth, causing him to drop and break his cellphone, according to police. The man reported that he ran into a store to call police, and that as he was inside the other man took out a baseball bat and smashed his Jeep’s driver-side mirror before driving away, police said.
The man was described as white/Hispanic, age 20 to 25, about 5-3 and 170 pounds, and wearing a blue skullcap and blue jacket.
A man reported that he was robbed at about 1:40 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, in the 5400 block of North Harlem Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 47-year-old man reported that he was waiting for a bus when a man whom he was smoking a cigarette with punched him in the back of the head and took his iPhone and $13 in cash from his pocket, and he was transported to Amita Resurrection Medical Center for treatment, according to police.
A woman reported that a man tried to rob her and steal her dog at about 3 a.m. Monday, May 13, in the 4500 block of North Melvina Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 29-year-old woman reported that she was walking her pit bull when a black four-door sedan with frontal damage circled the block before it drove up and the front seat passenger exited and approached her, and that when she said her dog bites the man replied “It’s okay, I have pit bulls,” the driver yelled “grab the dog” and the man outside grabbed at the dog’s leash before the woman started screaming for help and the men drove away, according to police.
Both men were described as white and age 18 to 20.
A man was arrested for allegedly burglarizing a car at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday, May 19, in the 6500 block of North Oxford Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A man reported that he saw a man inside his neighbor’s Nissan Rogue rifling through the glove compartment, and that he dragged the man out and detained the man for police, according to police. The man was arrested on signed complaints, and officers found the man to be in possession of miscellaneous tools and clothing believed to be from other vehicular burglaries, as well as a small plastic bag containing a substance suspected of being marijuana, police said.
The suspect was identified by police as Jordan C. Saunders, age 23, of the 3800 block of North Nora Avenue.
A teenager reported that he was robbed in an apparent gang-related incident at about 10:30 p.m. Monday, May 13, in the 4800 block of West Melrose Street, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The teenager reported that he was outside with a friend when a silver Toyota Camry with tinted windows and two male occupants drove up and the driver got out, punched him in the face and took his iPhone before driving away east, according to police.
The driver was described as about age 22 and approximately 5-6.
Several vehicles were reported stolen between 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, and 5:45 a.m. Sunday, May 19, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Stolen vehicles were reported in the 3700 block of North Oconto Avenue, the 5000 block of West Wilson Avenue, the 5200 block of West Patterson Avenue, the 5300 block of West Waveland Avenue, the 5500 block of North Linder Avenue and the 6700 block of West Belmont Avenue, according to police.
A woman reported that she was the victim of a scam at her house in the 3400 block of North Neenah Avenue at about 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that a man approached her door and escorted her to the rear to discuss concrete work before she denied his services and he left, and that when she returned inside she discovered that her bedroom and side doors were open and that a safe containing five diamond rings and three gold necklaces valued at $10,000 was missing, according to police.
The man was described as white/Hispanic and about 6-1.
A couple reported that they were the victim of a scam at their house in the 3500 block of North Pontiac Avenue at about 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 17, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The couple reported that two men came to their front door and one escorted the woman to the backyard to discuss landscaping while the other man said he was a plumber and went into a bathroom with the male resident before both men drove away in an unknown vehicle, and they later discovered that a bedroom was ransacked and that $200 in cash, a collectible coin set and a box containing unknown additional valuables were missing, according to police.
The men were both described as white.
A woman reported that her vehicle was burglarized between 10:30 p.m. Friday, May 10, and 4 p.m. Sunday, May 12, while it was parked in the 5100 block of West Waveland Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 49-year-old woman reported that when she returned to her parked Nissan Altima she discovered that the front passenger-side window was broken and that a triangular case containing a black .40-caliber handgun was missing, according to police.
An employee of Birrieria Aguascalientes, 5756 W. Belmont Ave., reported that the restaurant was burglarized between 10 p.m. Friday, May 17 and 6 a.m. Saturday, May 18, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The employee reported that when she returned to work she was unable to enter the building until another employee was able to force the door open and she discovered that cash register drawers were emptied of about $400 in cash and about $100 in change, according to police.
A woman reported that her home in the 5000 block of West Byron Street was burglarized before 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 13, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned home she discovered that a woman’s wedding band valued at $1,000, three yellow bracelets valued at $700 total, a pair of yellow earrings valued at $500 and a yellow chain-link necklace valued at $500 were missing, and responding officers discovered that the rear door was forced open, according to police.
A man reported that his apartment in the 5900 block of West Dakin Street was burglarized between 1:30 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. Monday, May 13, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that when he returned home he discovered the front and rear doors were unlocked and that two HP laptop computers valued at $1,000 each, a stereo system valued at $500, a blender valued at $500, a bottle of cologne valued at $400 and a frying pan valued at $200 were missing, according to police.
A woman reported that jewelry was stolen from her relative’s home in the 4500 block of North Mulligan Avenue between 7 a.m. Tuesday, May 7 and 5 p.m. Thursday, May 16, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned to her relative’s home she discovered that jewelry including at least three yellow rings, two silver rings and a yellow band with gemstones valued at about $30,000 were missing, according to police.
Several packages were reported stolen from homes in the area between 9 a.m. Thursday, May 9, and 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Thefts were reported in the 4100 block of North Leclaire Avenue, the 5000 block of North Elston Avenue, the 5600 block of North Moody Avenue, the 5700 block of West Warwick Avenue and the 7300 block of West Fitch Avenue, according to police.
