Local Crime from 16th District 7-31-13
A MAN WAS arrested at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, after neighbors detained him after he fled from a home in the 6700 block of North Loleta Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police
A resident of the home reported that she was sitting on the back porch and that when she went inside, she heard noise coming from upstairs and saw a man going through dresser drawers in a bedroom, according to police. The woman said that she ran out of the house, and that after the man left, she chased him down the street yelling for help, police said.
Several resident joined the chase and were able to restrain the man, according to police. The suspect was wearing an Illinois Department of Corrections monitoring bracelet, and it was later learned that he was on parole for burglary, police said.
Items including a change purse and some jewelry that were reported stolen were recovered, police said.
The suspect was identified by police as Brian W. Marcus, age 41, of the 3700 block of West Sunnyside Avenue.
A MAN WAS arrested for failing to register as a sex offender and another man was arrested for carrying marijuana after police questioned them because they were riding their bicycles on a sidewalk in the 4900 block of North Milwaukee Avenue at about 6:45 p.m. Thursday, July 25, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The officers reported that pedestrians had to move aside as the bicycles passed, according to police. One of the men allegedly possessed about 3 grams of marijuana, police said.
One of the suspects, who was identified by police as Billyjack M. Tate, of the 4900 block of West Argyle Street, was charged with failure to register as a sex offender, police said. The other suspect, who was identified by police as Benjamin Goldberg, age 18, of the 5600 block of West Patterson Avenue, was charged with possession of marijuana, police said.
A 25-YEAR-OLD man reported that he was shot in the hand as he was closing a gate to an industrial site in the 5500 block of North Northwest Highway at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, July 27, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that a driver of a white sedan reached across a female passenger and fired a handgun three times through an open passenger-side window, according to police. The man said that he is a former gang member and that he believes that the assailant may be a member of a gang, police said.
A 35-YEAR-OLD man reported that several shots were fired into his home in the 3600 block of North Austin Avenue in an apparent gang-related incident at about 7:15 p.m. Saturday, July 27, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that two cars followed him as he was walking home from a gas station and that the gunshots began as he was entering his home through a rear porch, according to police. One of the bullets struck a refrigerator inside the house, and five gunshot casings were found in the alley, police said.
AUTOMATED teller machines were broken into at two businesses, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The owners of World Wide Liquors, 3500 N. Harlem Ave., reported that $18,500 in cash and lottery tickets were stolen during a burglary which occurred between 11:30 p.m. Saturday, July 27, and 10:40 a.m. Sunday, July 28, according to police. Alarm panels and surveillance cameras were pulled from the walls, and the ATM was pried open, police said.
A manager of Laramie Bakery, 3232 N. Harlem Ave., reported that an undermined amount of cash and security camera equipment were stolen during a burglary which occurred between 10:30 p.m. Saturday, July 27, and 7 a.m. Sunday, July 28, according to police. Internet and telephones lines to the building were cut, police said.
A CLERK AT VCG UNIFORM, 5050 W. Irving Park Road, reported that a man who has history of impersonating a police officer tried to purchase a police uniform at the store at about 12:20 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The clerk reported that he became suspicious of the man and discovered that in 2009 he was arrested after he went on patrol with police, who later discovered that he was not an officer, according to police. The clerk said that the man told him that he worked in the 7th (Englewood) Police District, police said.
The man left without purchasing a uniform, and he was arrested about 2 hours later when he returned to pick up items that he had left behind, according to police.
The suspect was identified by police as Vincent Richardson, age 18, of the 6300 block of South Marshfield Avenue.
CATALYTIC CONVERTERS were reported stolen from 10 parked vehicles between July 19 and July 28, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The incidents were reported to have taken place in the 5000 block of West Argyle Street, the 5400 block of North Lotus Avenue, the 5100 block of West Winona Street, the 4900 block of North Menard Avenue, the 5000 block of North Mango Avenue, the 5500 block of West Catalpa Avenue, the 5600 block of North Lamon Avenue, the 5800 block of West Higgins Avenue and the 5300 block of North Linder Avenue, according to police.
A MAN REPORTED that his 1999 Chrysler sedan was stolen at about 6 p.m. Monday, July 29, while it was parked at Portage Park, 4100 N. Long Ave., according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A MAN REPORTED that his apartment in the 5300 block of West Leland Avenue was burglarized between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday, July 29, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that when he returned home he discovered that the front hall door had been pried open and that a 32-inch television set was missing, according to police.
