Local Crime from 16th District 8-16-17
TWO MEN WERE arrested after they allegedly fired gunshots at two men at about 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, in the 4000 block of North Central Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A 22-year-old man reported that he was with a 23-year-old man in a parking lot and that they both argued with two men after he recognized that one of the men allegedly robbed him at gunpoint in July, and that the men pointed to their waistbands that they had handguns and threw rocks at them before they ran away through a gangway toward an alley, according to police.
The two men reported that after they entered their vehicle and drove toward the men in the alley, the two men started shooting at them and struck one of them, police said. The alleged shooters were arrested after two witnesses reported that the men ran into an apartment and officers discovered the men inside the unit, police said.
The man who was shot refused treatment by Chicago Fire Department paramedics, according to police.
The suspects were identified as Patrick L. Johnson, age 22, of the 2300 block of West Fullerton Avenue and Miguel Santiago, age 20, of the 4000 block of North Central Avenue address.
A MAN DIED in a fire inside his apartment in the 6300 block of West Raven Street at about 12:50 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Officers responded to a call of a fire and discovered that while firefighters were attempting to extinguish the fire in a first floor apartment unit they discovered a 34-year-old woman suffering from minor burns and smoke inhalation that they transported to Lutheran General Hospital, according to police. Officers said that after the fire was extinguished firefighters discovered an unconscious 63-year-old man in the living room of the unit who was pronounced dead at the scene at about 1:21 a.m. by paramedics, according to police. Authorities reported that the fire appears to have been started by a cigarette, police said.
The deceased man was identified by authorities as Timothy J. Coughlin, age 63, of the West Raven Street address.
A MAN REPORTED that four men attacked him at about 2:20 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, while he was riding his bicycle in the 4900 block of North Meade Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 22-year-old man reported that while he was riding his bicycle four men drove up next to him in a white Jeep automobile, exited the vehicle and pushed, kicked and punched him before they entered the vehicle and drove away, according to police.
The man was treated at Presence Resurrection Hospital for a fractured cheekbone, police said.
A MAN REPORTED that a man took his laptop computer at about 11:50 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, from the stairs outside of Mike’s Barber Shop, 6680 N. Northwest Hwy., according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that he was sitting on the outside stairs of the barber shop with his Samsung laptop computer valued at $5,000 lying on the stairs next to him, and that a man ran toward him, took the computer from the stairs, entered a silver sedan and then drove away with it, according to police.
SCHOOL officials reported that Prussing School, 4650 N. Menard Ave., was burglarized between 2:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, and 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Officials reported that they discovered that numerous classrooms and offices had been ransacked, that snack wrappers were found in several of the locations, that obscene artwork was drawn on a chalkboard, and that two Apple MacBook computers valued at $2,500, 16 Chromebook computers valued at $3,200 and several iPads valued at $200 each were missing, according to police.
School officials also reported that the engineer building on the west side of the school grounds had been entered, that there were no signs of forced entry to the building, and that keys were missing from the building that school staff discovered at locations inside the main school building, along with a basketball that was allegedly left behind, police said.
THE MANAGER of the Koziol Car Wash, 5410 W. Belmont Ave., reported that a man broke into the business at about 5 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The manager reported that she received a phone call from the business’s surveillance alarm company at 5 a.m. and that she did not see any incident via her home camera, but that when she arrived at work at 7 a.m., she discovered that the cash register and rear door of the business were damaged, according to police. Officers saw on video surveillance footage that a man entered the rear door, opened the office door with his T-shirt and attempted to open the cash register with a screwdriver-like object and that after he was unsuccessful, the man exited the rear door and fled, police said.
SEVERAL vehicle thefts were reported on the between Aug. 7 and Aug.12, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Stolen vehicles were reported in the 5000 block of West Bernice Avenue, the 5500 block of West Wilson Avenue, the 3400 block of North Ozark Avenue and the 4800 block of West Melrose Street, according to police.
