Man charged for firing gun at off-duty cop
A man was charged with attempted murder in connection with an incident in which he allegedly fired a gun at an off-duty police officer during a reported theft at about 8:30 a.m. Sunday, March 8, in the 5200 block of North Lawler Avenue, according to the Chicago Police Department Office of News Affairs.
The officer witnessed a man tampering with a vehicle and identified himself and attempted to intervene when the man fired a gun at him and he returned fired and the man fled, according to police.
The man reportedly arrived later at Saint Bernard Hospital with a gunshot wound to the hip and the subject was stabilized and transferred to Stroger Hospital for treatment where he was later placed into custody after being identified, police said.
The suspect was identified by police as Jimmy Fleming, age 27, of the 7800 Block of South Kedzie Avenue.
The officer involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days, police said.
