Man killed in suspected gang-related incident

Reported gang violence in Albany Park leaves one dead Suspected gang-related violence resulted in the shooting death of a man and others being injured at about 2:50 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, in the basement of a residence in the 4900 block of North Harding Avenue in the 17th (Albany Park) District, according to Chicago police.

Two men, ages 24 and 29, were shot by an unknown offender, and the younger man was pronounced on the scene after being shot multiple times, according to police. The other man suffered a gunshot wound to his left foot and was transported to Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition, police said.

Initial reports indicated that only two men had been shot, but it was later learned that a third man, age 34, was shot in the calf and self transported himself to Swedish, police said. He was listed in fair condition, police said.

Alderman Samantha Nugent (39th) has said police told her witnesses were not cooperative with responding officers and that the shootings appeared to be part of an isolated gang incident.

A portion of the Volta School campus backs up to the 4900 block of Harding, where the shootings took place.

A shooting incident also was reported in the 17th District at about 3:10 p.m. Saturday in the 5100 block of North Bernard Street, but it’s not clear if it was related to the Harding incident. A man reported being shot in the calf while he was near the sidewalk, police said.

Area Five detectives are investigating the shootings, police said.
