Man shot near theater

A 22-year-old suspected gang member who is on parole was shot in the shoulder at about 12:10 a.m. Saturday, June 13, after he left a party at the Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man and a male companion reportedly were confronted by a group of about 10 people in the 4000 block of North Laporte Avenue, and a member of the group fired several shots, one of which struck the man, according to police. The reason for the altercation is not known, but a window of the car which the man had driven to the party was reported broken, police said.
No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and it is not known if the assailants had been at the theater, police said.
After he was shot, the man and his friend ran back to the theater and reported the incident to a police officer, who was waiting for an ambulance for a man who had been found passed out on a sidewalk near the theater, police said.
In addition, about 30 minutes earlier, a police officer was injured near the theater during a confrontation with another man, police said. At the time police were responding to a reporter of a disturbance outside the theater which had been reported by theater management, police said.
The event at the theater was called "Don’t Be Lazy," and it was scheduled to run from 8 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., police said. It was hosted by Manny Treo, who is known for holding parties and concerts featuring guest celebrities and disc jockeys, and admission was $10.
The shooting occurred a year after the city reached an agreement with theater management that allowed liquor to be served at the theater.
