Marie’s Pizza & Liquors, a neighborhood landmark for 80 years in Mayfair, closed in 2023, and the property is now for sale.

The business had been operated by three generations of the Karavidas family. A segment of the television show Chicago Fire was filmed last fall at the site, whose address is 4125-29 W. Lawrence Ave., according to the Pulaski Elston Business Association.

The approximately 0.25-acre parcel is located at the southeast corner of Lawrence and Kedvale avenues. It is zoned B1-1, which allows for a variety of retail and office uses, but any type of residential redevelopment on the site likely would require a rezoning.

DarwinPW Realty is listing the property, with an asking price of $1.7 million.

The windows in the front of the building, which measures about 8,700 square feet, currently feature a mural designed by Cyd Smillie of Arts Alive Chicago.

The mural was a winner in a competition that was used to promote the Art Institute of Chicago’s summer exhibition “Georgia O’Keeffe: ‘My New Yorks.’”

The exhibition’s “Project Windows” storefront contest included tributes to O’Keeffe in retail window displays throughout the city.

“We are thrilled to participate in another opportunity to bring public art to the Mayfair community,” association executive director Amie Zander said last summer.

“It is truly exciting to crawl inside Georgia O’Keefe’s oeuvre and play with her palette, her flowers and now her city images. Chicagohenge seemed to be the perfect fusion of her world and ours,” Smillie said.

The property reportedly went on the market in November. No potential buyers have contacted the 39th Ward office about the possibility of rezoning the property, according to Alderman Samantha Nugent’s office.
