Masked gunmen seen stealing air bags on Chicago side street

Four air bags were reported stolen from vehicles parked in the 5900 and 6500 blocks of West School Street between about 2 and 7 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A woman reported at about 5 a.m. that five men wearing black clothing and black ski masks broke into several vehicles parked in the 6500 block of School and took their air bags, according to police.
The woman reported that two of the men had handguns, police said. Another woman reported that she returned to her vehicle parked in the 5900 block of School at about 7 a.m. and discovered the air bag was stolen from her vehicle, according to police.
All four of the vehicles were Honda CR-Vs between model years 2018 and 2024, police said.
Detailed descriptions of the offenders were not provided.
Police have said that certain Honda models are being targeted for the air bag thefts because their air bags appear to be less likely to activate as they’re being removed.
The bags reportedly are being resold.
