Meeting on SSA levy rate slated
The Six Corners Association and the Special Service Area Advisory Committee will hold a community meeting to discuss a proposed increase in the service area’s tax levy for 2015 at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in the Filament Theater, 4041 N. Milwaukee Ave.
The Six Corners Special Service Area Commission will meet at 2 p.m. Oct. 8 at the theater.
The meeting is required because the proposed tax levy will be more than 5 percent higher than in 2014. A similar meeting on the tax levy increase was held last summer.
The service area funds are used to help maintain and market the commercial area, including snow removal, the recruitment of new businesses and the installation of public art. The proposed budget for 2015 is $288,200, an increase from $226,461 in 2014, and the tax rate would increase from 0.52 percent to 0.685 percent.
The tax primarily affects commercial properties within a 2-block radius from the intersection of Milwaukee and Cicero avenues and Irving Park Road.
In addition, some residential properties, including the condominiums in the Klee Plaza, 4006 N. Milwaukee Ave., are subject to the service area tax.
The proposed tax levy would result in some condominium owners paying an additional $74 in the special service area property tax and storefront owners paying an additional $160 to $259, according to a commission member. The commission approved the new tax levy in July.
