Meeting set on mosque

The North Mayfair Improvement Association will hold a community meeting on a proposed Yemini mosque and community center at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, in the auditorium at Palmer School, 5051 N. Kenneth Ave.
The mosque would be located in a triangular-shaped industrial building that is located behind several bungalows in the 4800 block of North Kentucky Avenue and that is bordered on all three sides by an alley, with no direct access to a street. The community center would be across one of the alleys in a portion of a building at 4860 N. Elston Ave. that houses a car rental agency. Project organizer Naser Nasser is scheduled to present plans for the project, which would be contingent on the Zoning Board of Appeals issuing a special use for religious assembly.
Parking for the mosque reportedly would be allowed at the community center, which would have classrooms. The site of the proposed mosque had a court-appointed receiver who was overseeing the property until its recent sale.
A spokesman for Alderman Margaret Laurino (39th) said last month the alderman had not received plans for the project.
