Men arrested following gunshots near Milwaukee & Higgins in Jefferson Park

by BRIAN NADIG Two men were taken into custody at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in connection with the crash of a reported stolen car on a Jefferson Park side street, the reported gunfire near Milwaukee and Higgins avenues and the finding of bags of suspected narcotics, according to Chicago police. Responding to reports of five gunshots in the 4800 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, officers were directed by a witness toward two men as they were walking toward the Jefferson Park CTA Terminal, 4917 N. Milwaukee Ave., according to police. Officers were able to quickly detain one of the men, while the other started running south on Lipps Avenue toward Ainslie Street, where he reportedly was seen throwing an object into a vacant lot in the 5200 block of West Ainslie Street, police said. A weapon, described as a semi-automatic handgun, reportedly was found in the lot, police said. The other man allegedly was found to posses a knotted plastic baggie containing 22 additional knotted baggies, each with a white rock-like substance of suspected cocaine, police said. Officers were later shown video footage from residents that showed the men allegedly leaving the scene of a crash where a vehicle struck a parked vehicle near Argyle Street and Leclaire Avenue, police said. One of the suspects allegedly had been driving the reported stolen Infiniti that struck the parked car, police said. He allegedly had in his right front pocket a key fob for the Infiniti, police said. During the investigation, a man came to the 16th (Jefferson Park) District Station, 5151 N. Milwaukee Ave., and reported that he saw the two men arguing when he was at the Subway Sandwiches at 4861 N. Milwaukee Ave. and that as he was then driving away he heard gunshots and a rear window of his vehicle shattered, police said. Charges were pending against the suspects as of late Wednesday morning, police said. One of the men reportedly lives in the suburbs and the other on the Northwest Side.
