More than 40 air bags were reported stolen from the steering wheel of Hondas or Acuras on the Northwest Side between March 21 and 27, with a vast majority of thefts between the evening of March 24 and the morning of March 25, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Thefts were reported in the 5000 block of West Pensacola Avenue, the 5500 block of North New England Avenue, the 3100 block of North Natoma Avenue, the 5300 block of North Nashville Avenue, the 5400 block of North Melvina Avenue and in the 5000, 5100 and 5200 blocks of North Meade Avenue, according to police.
Thefts were also reported in the 5400 block of North Mulligan Avenue, the 6300 block of West Berwyn Avenue, the 6400 block of West Higgins Avenue, the 5200 block of West Roscoe Street and in the 3200, 3300 and 5500 blocks of North Normandy Avenue, according to police.

Thefts were reported once in the 5300 and 5500 blocks, and twice in the 5400 block of North Nordica Avenue, according to police. Thefts were also reported four times in the 5300 and twice in the 5400 block of North Neenah Avenue, police said.

Thefts were also reported in the 6100 block of West Gunnison Street and in the 3300, 5100 and 5200 blocks of North Oak Park Avenue, police said. More air bag thefts were reported in the 7000 block of West Summerdale Avenue, the 4400 block of North Moody Avenue and in the 4200 block of North Marmora Avenue, according to police.
Hondas are being targeted because the air bag can be removed without activating more easily than with other types of vehicles, police said. The district is urging the owners of Hondas to use a “club” security device to better secure the steering wheel area.
The offenders were described in many of the incidents as three Black men wearing black hooded sweatshirts, police said. In most of the thefts a driver side window is broken and the airbag is stolen, according to police.
There also were about eight attempted burglaries to vehicles reported in the last week in the 16th District, police said.
