Mr B’s Caribbean Grill to bring ‘A Taste of the Islands’ to Jefferson Park on Chicago’s NW side

by BRIAN NADIG

The new Mr. B’s Caribbean Grill is scheduled to open in February, at 4801 N. Milwaukee Ave. in the heart of the Jefferson Park business district.

Owner Cornel Barrett has previously operated a similar style restaurant owned by a sister in California. Mr. B’s menu will feature a variety of Jamaican dishes.

“It’s like BBQ but we call it jerk chicken … pork … with rice and beans, plantains,” he said. “That’s the staple of Jamaican food … spicy food.”

Other menu items will include salads, corn bread, collared greens, mac and cheese, jerk wings, beef oxtails, Chicago style ribs, jerk salmon, fried catfish and several curry dishes, including shrimp, chicken and goat. Combo entrees also will be on the menu.

Mr. B’s is located in a corner building at the Milwaukee-Lawrence intersection that has been vacant for several years. Previous occupants included the Golden Duck and Costa Cafe, whose owner introduced Barrett to the location, which he now leases.

Barrett said that he grew in the Evanston/ Rogers Park area and that while he was working in California, he hoped he’d return to the Chicago area and have his own restaurant.

“I always told my dad that I’d come back to Chicago,” he said. He added that the restaurant’s name “Mr. B’” pays to his father. “I’ve always enjoyed cooking.”

The restaurant has undergone recent renovations, and longterm plans call for an outdoor patio in the rear of the restaurant. Applying for a liquor license also is part of future plans, Barrett said.

The restaurant features a counter where orders will be taken.

Meanwhile, Mr. B’s is seeking to hire staff members, including a cashier, line cook and dishwasher. This interested are asked to call 847-641-8882.
