New bakery to open inside former Ideal Bakery in Jefferson Park on Chicago’s NW Side

by BRIAN NADIG
A new bakery is planning to open inside the former Ideal Bakery at 4765 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Jefferson Park.
The name “La Ideal” recently was posted on the storefront, and other artwork on the building lists donuts, cakes and Mexican bread as some of the bakery items that will be sold there.
It is not clear when the bakery will be opening, as no one from the business could be reached for this story. A business license for Panderia (bakery) Mana Inc. has been issued for the location.
Ideal Bakery, which has had several owners since the 1980s, closed its retail store on Milwaukee Avenue in August of 2024 and relocated its wholesale operations to Elk Grove Village.
The large Ideal neon sign that was attached to the building for around 75 years was removed last fall.
The building had previously been home to the first Jewel grocery store in Jefferson Park, but the Jewel eventually relocated to 5225 W. Lawrence Ave., where the Sportif Importer bike shop later opened, according to researcher Frank Suerth of the Northwest Chicago Historical Society. The Lawrence site is now vacant land in a commercial district marked by empty lots and in some instances storefronts that have been vacant for 30 to 40 years.
The Milwaukee-Lawrence shopping district once had three bakeries, including Neuman’s, and many other retailers, including shoe and fur stores, but by the mid-1990s, much of the area’s retail had disappeared, including the Annes Department Store.
