New owner for Central-Waveland lot, but no immediate redevelopment plans
by BRIAN NADIG
A vacant parcel at the southeast corner of Central and Waveland avenues was recently sold, but redevelopment plans are not known at this time, according to Alderman Gilbert Villegas (36th).
"We have been pressing the new owner hard for more information, but he really doesn’t have definitive plans," said Villegas’ policy director Justin Heath. Soil testing is being conducted on the property, he said.
Villegas had the site downzoned last year after he rejected a plan to build an apartment complex with 55 affordable-housing units there. The site’s former developer, Full Circle Communities, recently proposed to build a mixed-income housing project at 5150 N. Northwest Hwy. in the 45th Ward.
The Central-Waveland site’s new RS-2 zoning is intended primarily for single-family homes.
The site was once home to a Dominick’s Finer Foods store. A CVS Pharmacy was built on the south end of the property, but separate plans for medical offices and condominiums on the north end never materialized.
