About 40 new jobs will be created as part of an expansion project for New World Van Lines Inc., according to the Peterson Pulaski Industrial Corridor. The household moving company acquired the former Reliable Perforating building, 5895 N. Rogers Ave., in 2008 and has been using that building for several years in addition to its main facility at 5879 N. Rogers Ave. The Reliable building is being demolished, and plans call for the construction of a new building with a high ceiling that will be used for storage and unloading trucks.
The Illinois Appellate Court has reversed a circuit court’s decision to dismiss former 45th Ward aldermanic candidate John Garrido’s defamation lawsuit against the election’s winner, Alderman John Arena, and the Service Employees International Union Illinois PAC, which supported Arena’s campaign. The case has been remanded back to lower court for further consideration. At issue is campaign literature which claimed that Garrido profited from the city’s parter meter deal. Garrido lost the election by 30 votes and has said that he is not sure if he will run in 2015.
Contrary to some reports, the Kid Ink concert will not becoming to the Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., according to theater owner Eddie Carranza. No concerts will be booked at the Portage, which closed last month, until a new operator of the theater is in place, said Carranza, who also owns the Congress Theater, 2135 N. Milwaukee Ave., where Carranza said Kid Ink will be performing.
Alderman John Arena (45th) will hold a community meeting on Thursday, June 27, on a proposal for the former Riddell football helmet factory, 3670 N. Milwaukee Ave. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal, Kostner and Byron. Plans call for 50-single-family homes on the 179,000-square-foot. Several other proposals, including ones for townhouses and apartments, have failed to materialize on the site.
There have been reports of a possible social club at 4801 N. Milwaukee, but a representative of the site says that plans are being made to open a new restaurant there.
