The 16th (Jefferson Park) Police District Advisory Committee and students from Notre Dame College Prep and Saint Patrick High School provided meals to officers on Sunday, Aug. 18, as food was barbecued on an grill outside the district station, 5151 N. Milwaukee Ave.

The committee also provided snacks during the week. The officers were working long shifts due to the Democratic National Convention.

The committee’s volunteers who provided the food included Christine Washkevich, Ed Quartullo, Ian Thomson, Leo Miller, Eva Skowronski, Floyd Rueger, Pamela Galas, Gwynne Carlson and Mary Hertel and Notre Dame students Nicholas Berndt, John Carr, Devin Clark and Sean Washkevich and Saint Patrick student Jude Del Pilar.

“They’re all sons of first responders,” Quartullo said of the students. “Devin … is part of the grilling club at Notre Dame, so he was our master griller (and) taught the others.”

“We had three waves of (district) officers from 4 to 8 p.m. They were working … 12 hours … from 6 to 6 and 7 to 7, and some state troopers,” Quartullo said. “They were all appreciative, thanking us.”

“We put out 120 burgers, (and) there were sausages, hot dogs,”

Quartullo said. “We had a lot of different desserts.”

The committee assists the district on a variety of community policing initiatives, including its court advocacy and faith-based programs and senior outreach.
