Red ribbons line funeral procession route for Chicago fire captain killed as a result of arson

by BRIAN NADIG

Hundreds of red ribbons adorn lampposts and trees along Milwaukee Avenue and Harlem Avenue to honor the memory of Chicago Fire Captain David Meyer, a Northwest Side resident who was killed last week while fighting a garage fire that was ruled arson.

“He’s a neighborhood guy, father of four, and he married his high school sweetheart,” said 45th Ward Alderman James Gardiner, also a firefighter who once served with Meyer in the same battalion.

Meyer, who was 54-years-old, served the city of Chicago for 28 years. He went to Lane Tech High School, loved watching Chicago sports and was known for riding his Harley around the country with friends.

Alderman Anthony Napolitano (41st), also a firefighter, said that he “never had the pleasure of working with Meyer but knew him well in the neighborhood,” Napolitano said. “He was a master carpenter.”

On Sunday, April 27, Gardiner organized an effort to tie ribbons to “trees, lampposts and anything else we could” to help pay respect to Meyer.

The ribbons can be found on both sides of Milwaukee Avenue from the 16th (Jefferson Park) Police Station, 5151 N. Milwaukee Ave., to Harlem Avenue, from which the ribbons continue north on Harlem to Saint John Brebeuf Church, 8305 N. Harlem Ave.

The ribbons are meant to cover the procession from Malec and Sons Funeral Home, 6000 N. Milwaukee Ave., where the visitation is being held on Monday, April 28, to the funeral service at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, at the church.

About 65 volunteers showed up to help with the ribbons, Gardiner said. Several business groups, including members of the Gladstone Park and Portage Park chambers of commerce, assisted.

It’s not clear how many ribbons were posted, but all the available red ribbon was bought over the weekend from multiple Michaels craft stores in the city and nearby suburbs, Gardiner said.

Meyer was killed as the result of a fire on Wednesday, April 23, in the 1200 block of North Pine Ave. on the West Side.

A few hours later a suspect, who was identified by police as Charles Green, age 44, of the 5400 block of West Potomac Avenue, was taken into custody in connection with the arson, according to police. He was charged with a felony count of murder/strong probability death/injury, a felony count of murder/other forcible felony, and aggravated arson with injury to a first responder, police said.
