Retaining wall on Lawrence exit ramp on inbound Kennedy Expressway in Jefferson Park collapses; partial reopening of ramp possible in a week

by BRIAN NADIG
The Illinois Department of Transportation says an emergency closure of the inbound Kennedy Expressway (Interstate 90) ramp to Lawrence Avenue went into effect on Saturday, Aug. 1, because a retaining wall fell down.
The department said that it plans to conduct some temporary repairs starting Tuesday, Aug. 4, so that one traffic lane on the ramp can reopen in about a week. The ramp normally has two lanes, allowing for left turns onto eastbound Lawrence from either the left or right lane, with right turns only permitted from the right lane.
Additional assessments will be required to determine if a partial or complete replacement of the retaining wall is needed, according to the department.
Chicago’s Northwest Side has been dealing with numerous road and ramp closures this summer. Currently the Foster bridge over the Kennedy is being completely rebuilt, and some inbound Kennedy motorists would use Lawrence as an alternate to Foster — and apparently that is not an option for at least another week as temporary repairs are being made to the retaining wall.
