Robert Vanna retires after 33 years on the Chicago Police force

by BRIAN NADIG

Robert Vanna, who just retired from the Chicago police force after 33 1/2 years of service, encourages officers to seek support from their family members during difficult times.

“It’s going to be a constant pressure on you,” Vanna said at his April 30 retirement celebration. “Check in with your family.”

He added that the decline in the number of officers working in the city adds pressure to those patrolling the streets and investigating crimes.

Vanna thanked his wife Diane Vanna and the rest of his family for their help and guidance during his career.

For the past 9 1/2 months Vanna served as the commander of the 16th (Jefferson Park) District. He lives in the district.

Vanna said that he had the privilege to work with great officers during his career and that officer safety was always a top concern, as he had to deploy officers into dangerous situations.

“It was never lost on me” the risks which officers regularly take while carrying out their duties and responsibilities, Vanna said. Since he joined the force in 1991, 54 officers have been killed in the line of duty, he said.

“You guys move the needle. You make the district safer,” he told officers. To be successful, he said, commanders must seek input from those patrolling the neighborhoods. Known for his use of graphs to analyze crime trends and love of famous lines from movies, Vanna said that his career included a wide variety of assignments. He previously was commander of the 24th (Rogers Park) District, once served as a detective and held positions in the superintendent’s office, the Bureau of patrol and Internal Affairs.

“It’s been an incredible ride,” said Vanna, whose father was an officer.
