Taft HS Class of 1973 donates $7,000 for weight room in memory of Phil Vierneisel

A $7,000 donation from the Class of 1973 will go toward a recently expanded weight room facility at Taft High School.
“We’ve increased the size of the weight room by 1/3, and the donation will be used for new equipment,” Taft principal Dr. Ryan Glowacz said.
The weight room was expanded after office space was removed. “We weren’t really using the (offices),” Glowacz said. The weight room is about the size of “two large classrooms,” he added.
The donation was made in the memory of 1973 Taft graduate Phil Vierneisel, who played on Taft’s 1972 Chicago Public League championship team. He went on to be a punter at the University of Illinois.
Vierneisel passed away in 2020, and each year since then the school awards a leadership award in Vierneisel’s name to a football player. This school year’s winner was senior Jayden Camacho.
