Teen charged with killing Northside Prep student
A teenager was charged with murder after he allegedly fatally shot a Northside Prep High School student at about 5:35 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, in the 4400 block of West Addison Street, according to the Chicago Police Department Office of News Affairs and the 17th (Albany Park) District police.
The 17-year-old student was the front passenger in a grey 2004 Acura driven by another 17-year-old male from Northside Prep High School, 5501 N. Kedzie Ave., to pick up the driver’s friend, a 17-year-old male who attends Schurz High School, 3601 N. Milwaukee Ave., according to 17th District police.
The driver reported that the Schurz student entered the rear of the Acura and they made a U-turn to drive west on Addison when a group of males standing on a corner "made eye contact" with the rear passenger and one male fired several shots, striking the vehicle in the front and passenger-side windows, and they drove away to the 4500 block of West Belmont Avenue before they realized the front passenger was shot in the neck, according to police. The teenager was transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 6:25 p.m., police said.
The teenager was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Emanuel Gallegos, age 17, of the 5300 block of West Drummond Place.
A passenger in the Acura was allegedly asked about his gang affiliation by people in the group before he entered the car, according to police.
The shooter, who is an alleged gang member, turned himself into custody and was brought to Area North headquarters at Belmont and Western avenues on Wednesday, Feb. 27, and was charged as an adult with first-degree murder, according to police.
The suspect was identified by police as Luis Castejon, age 17, of the 5200 West Wrightwood Avenue.
A friend of the Gallegos family started a Go Fund Me page to help with the slain teen’s funeral expenses.
