Trees cut down in preparation for Devon Avenue bridge work over Edens Expressway

by CYRYL JAKUBOWSKI
Trees cut down in Sauganash and Lincolnwood on Devon Avenue are just the beginning of a long construction season.
The state Department of Transportation is planning to replace the Devon Avenue bridge deck over the Edens Expressway, including installing new lights at Cicero Avenue and Devon.
Construction will last until next year, officials said. It’s expected to begin in late spring.
Residents have brought up concerns about rows of trees being removed along Devon, but officials say it’s part of the project and that they will be replanted.

“We need more trees, not less,” a resident said.
IDOT spokeswoman Maria Castaneda said that the work is part of the “Rebuild Illinois” program, in which many bridge decks are being replaced.
The $15.6 million project consists of replacing the Devon Avenue bridge over the Edens with a new wider structure, Castaneda said.
The project includes new LED lights, modernized traffic signals, new sidewalks and ADA upgrades. Throughout construction, Devon will remain open with lane reductions, Castaneda said.
The existing structure will be replaced with a new two span continuous galvanized steel bridge. It was opened around 1951 as part of the construction of the highway.
Devon will be raised to provide additional under-clearance for the interstate, according to plans.
A new pavement section will include a 7-foot sidewalk on the south side and a 10-foot shared use path on the north side.
The intersection of Devon and Cicero will be resurfaced, according to plans.
“I was informed that trees were removed in all four quadrants of the existing Devon Avenue bridge in preparation for upcoming construction of the bridge, as the new structure will be wider than the existing bridge. Additionally, a few trees were removed in the Devon Avenue center median between Leona and Lenox avenues to safely accommodate traffic crossover and staging,” Castaneda said.

Another bridge replacement project is underway on Irving Park Road over the Des Plaines River. Also, work on the Austin Avenue pedestrian bridge over the Kennedy Expressway will begin in June.
