The department is looking for the driver of a Jeep that was traveling westbound on Touhy when it struck a man who was walking north and crossing the street, police said. The Jeep fled the area and the man was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased, according to police.
The man was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Richard Haljean, age 57, of the 5700 block of North Oriole Avenue.
Earlier on Jan. 20, the driver of a Hyundai sedan was killed when his vehicle struck a tree at about 3:15 a.m. in the 4000 block of West Peterson Avenue, police said.
The man was driving with a 33-year-old woman at a high rate of speed west on Peterson when he lost control and struck a tree, coming to a stop on the sidewalk, according to police. The man died on the scene of the accident and the woman was transported in critical condition to Saint Francis Hospital, police said. The medical examiner’s office said the man was 34-years-old but did not release the man’s identity as of press time.
